Humpback Whales: Each winter, the waters off Los Cabos become a haven for migrating humpback whales. Gray Whales : The gray whales’ arrival in Magdalena Bay is a seasonal spectacle, typically occurring from January to March. During this time, the bay transforms into a bustling nursery as pregnant females arrive to give birth and nurture their calves, offering incredible opportunities for respectful and awe-inspiring encounters. It’s a chance to witness a crucial part of their life cycle in a serene and protected setting.
Giant Manta Rays: Experience the graceful ballet of Giant manta rays, with wingspans reaching up to 23 feet, into the waters around La Ventana during summer months June to September. Sea Lions: Baja California is home to lively colonies of sea lions, from Los Cabos to La paz, Loreto or Magdalena bay, they are often found basking on rocky outcrops, tanning around a marina or swimming in shallow waters all year long. These curious, playfull and vocal marine mammals are a joy to observe, whether you’re diving, snorkeling, or even boating.
Hammerhead Sharks: While sightings can occur throughout the year, the summer and fall months often bring larger numbers of scalloped hammerhead sharks. Witnessing schools of these unique sharks, with their distinctive head shape, cruising through the deep blue is a truly unforgettable dive. Silky sharks : From spring to summer, Silky sharks come around the Sea of Cortez to mate and reproduce. Mobula rays : Witness the mesmerizing migration of mobula rays in Baja from spring to early summer. Snorkeling or diving alongside thousands of these graceful “flying rays” as they glide and sometimes even leap out of the water is an absolutely breathtaking spectacle. Their sheer numbers is unique to this region.
Orcas/Killer Whales : The ocean’s apex predator do occasionally grace the waters of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific coast. These powerful and intelligent marine mammals can be sighted throughout the year, often in small pods as they hunt for prey like mobula rays, sea lions, sharks and even baby whales. The possibility of encountering these magnificent creatures adds an element of thrilling unpredictability to our Ocean Safari and snorkeling tours !
Dolphins : Dolphins are a common and delightful sight throughout the waters surrounding Baja California. Playful pods of various species, including bottlenose, spinner and common dolphins, are frequently spotted in their natural environment year-round especially during Ocean Safaris in La Ventana or in Los Cabos.
